Garden Route Ramble Tour 22-26 Aug 2017

Organiser: Dryland Ride

Date Tue 22 Aug 2017, 06:00
Province Eastern Cape
Type Mountain Bike

Africa’s great elephants once roamed free in the mountains and forests of the Southern Cape. Many of their trails still remain, converted into ox wagon routes over many years, and later into roads.

Dryland Ride invites you and your family to follow in the footsteps of giants that still echo through the mists of time. Ideal for beginners, the ancient routes once provided equally easy passage for these lumbering behemoths of old as they followed the gentle contour paths of the Cape Fold Mountains and crashed through the dense indigenous forest lining the Garden Route coast.

The team

Dryland Ride is a joint venture offering uniquely blended adventures, featuring MTB stage racing and 4×4 touring. It teams the talents of Dryland Events, SA’s leading MTB and cross-country running stage race organiser, with those of Bhejane 4X4 Adventures, which guides families on unforgettable self-drive 4X4 experiences in the region.
Between them, they have over 30 years’ experience in logistical support and planning to give you and your families the ride of a lifetime.

Accommodation

The accommodation for this trip entails a combination of guest houses, lodges and luxury camping.

Day 1: The tour starts in the Langkloof on the northern slopes of the Outeniqua Mountains.  The starting point is a 45-minute drive from Oudtshoorn and one hour from George Airport, and there is safe parking to leave your vehicles. Once we have transferred your luggage onto our logistics vehicles, you’ll set off on a short contour cycle at the base of the mountain to our private campsite for the night. As we get settled in and acquainted, the mountain bike guides and hosts will elaborate on the experience for the next four days. Before dinner we’ll have a tasting of local wines.

Day 3: Today will take us on more forestry roads and easy single-track among the forest ferns. Our destination for lunch is the old Millwood Gold Fields – the site of a short-lived gold rush in 1880 – deep in the Knysna Forest. After a tour of the mines, we do some more pedalling in the shadowy heart of the ancient forest, ending up at our campsite for the night at Diepvallei Forestry Station. Dinner will be prepared for us by the local community in a restaurant at the forestry station. Settle in as we get to learn more about the forest, woodcutters and elephants responsible for first hewing our routes.

Day 5: Those with vehicles at the starting point will be transferred there after a fond goodbye to the rest of the group, which heads back to George Airport. Bon voyage!

Please Note:

When entering: All flights into George should be in the morning and all flightsfrom George should be in the afternoon. We only provide one transfer time per day.

Day 2: After a big English breakfast we transfer you and your bikes to the sleepy hamlet of Herold, whence you will ride up and over the pleasant gradient of the Montagu Pass. This narrow gravel road is what remains of the old pass between George and Oudtshoorn. At the southern base of the pass it is all meandering single track to our lunch spot above Wilderness. After lunch, another vehicle transfer will take us to our chalet accommodation near Sedgefield and, once we’re settled in, those who want to can ride out with the guides to find more great single track and forestry roads in the lakes area.

Day 4: After more hearty fare at the community restaurant, we spend the morning riding through more forest canopy, ending up for lunch at the coast. From there we transfer to Storms River Village and book into our hotel accommodation before riding down the old Storms River pass, stopping once to take in the breath-taking views at a look-out point above sheer cliffs and ocean.

Our final evening ends with a tour of the artisanal goodness of the Storms River Micro Brewery and dinner in the hotel.
